Travel Details

Arcotel Velvet Berlin

Hotel Information: Set amid the nondescript, parking-garage-style architecture of the communist era and the ornate buildings of 19th-century Berlin, the hotel with its glass front stands out as an example of the contemporary style enlivening Berlin's revived Mitte section. Business and leisure travelers come for ready access to Mitte's professional offices, restaurants, bars, and historical attractions.

Amenity highlights: Hotel guests mingle with locals and out-of-towners in a polyglot social scene centered on the hotel's Austrian-German restaurant and tranquil, contemporary bar that begins in the afternoon and, by candlelight, continues well past midnight. Sidewalk seating--warmed by heaters in cool weather--fronts both restaurant and bar.

Insider tip: Damaged by war, plastered with flyers, and festooned with graffiti, Tacheles Cultural Center adjacent to the hotel is an artists' haven so hallowed in Berlin history that the East German regime dared not close it. Today it maintains scruffiness acquired during the communist era as a symbol of artistic resistance. Artists sell out of studios, a theater welcomes poets, and a cinema draws visitors at night.
