Grand Hyatt Beijing

Hotel Information: Grand Hyatt Beijing has a circular driveway with a large fountain, which is illuminated at night. The high-ceilinged lobby is flooded with natural light from huge windows and contains ornamental trees and displays of orchids and other flowers. The open-plan lobby café is candlelit in the evenings and lively with the hotel’s mostly business guests from the USA, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Europe.

Amenity highlights: The business centre has four computer workstations with high-speed Internet access (surcharge), as well as a ten-seat boardroom. 2,800 square metres (30,130 square feet) of conference space includes a Grand Ballroom and 13 other meeting rooms. Club Oasis features a 24-hour fitness centre, 55-metre resort-style indoor swimming pool, and an adjacent spa tub, steam room and sauna. The ladies’ section has a spa room, which offers various beauty treatments.

Insider tip: Around the corner, the contemporary energy of China is on show along Wangfujing, the capital’s most renowned shopping street. To the north, however, lie the back lakes, surrounded by a meandering network of old alleyways and courtyard (hutong) houses that have so far survived redevelopment. The neighbourhood gives glimpses of street life and a flavour of imperial China that is now largely confined to palaces and museums.

Getting around: Getting around the city by public transport or taxi is both cheap and convenient. The Beijing metro system has three lines, many stopping at or near tourist and business destinations. Numbered stations and announcements in English make using the system relatively easy, and tickets cost CNY3–5 (US$0.40–$0.70), depending on the destination. The closest stop to Grand Hyatt Beijing is Wangfujing Station on Line 1, about 5 minutes’ walk away. Metered taxis are abundant and cheap, with flag fall costing CNY10 (US$1.30) for the first 3 kilometres, and CNY1.60 (US$0.25) per subsequent kilometre. Rates vary slightly between taxi companies and rise 30% late at night. Buses charge a flat fare of CNY1–2 (less than US$0.30), but are difficult to navigate without knowledge of Chinese.
