Shangri-la China World Hotel

Hotel Information: Once into the lobby of the China World Hotel the marble floor gleams, soaring red pillars are topped with dragons, and a gilt ceiling drips with glittering chandeliers. The reception desk lies to the left, while to the right sprawls the Lobby Lounge, where the hotel’s mostly corporate guests, many from North America, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, enjoy live entertainment.

Amenity highlights: China World Hotel Beijing has a full-service business centre with boardrooms and lounge, complimentary Internet access, and comprehensive conference facilities, including a 1,537-square-metre (16,538-square-foot) Conference Hall. Recreational facilities include a fitness centre, swimming pool, and squash and tennis courts. A health club is equipped with spa tubs, steam rooms, sauna, and solarium.

Insider tip: The contemporary energy of China is on show along Wangfujing, the capital’s most renowned shopping street. To the north lie the back lakes, surrounded by a meandering network of old alleyways and courtyard (hutong) houses. A wander through the neighbourhood gives a glimpse of street life, and a flavour of imperial China that has now largely been confined to palaces and museums.

Getting there: A limousine service provided by China World Hotel Beijing will pick guests up at the airport. Travel by taxi is also very convenient, and there is a shuttle bus service. Rental cars are not recommended for travellers unfamiliar with this area.

Getting around: Getting around the city by public transport or taxi is both cheap and convenient. The Beijing metro system has three lines, many stopping at or near tourist and business destinations. Numbered stations and announcements in English make using the system relatively easy, and tickets cost RMB 3–5 (less than US$0.50) depending on the destination. The closest stop to China World Hotel Beijing is Guo Mao on Line 2, the entrance to which is in the shopping mall directly beneath the hotel. Metered taxis are abundant and cheap, with flagfall costing RMB 10 (US$1.30) for the first three kms, and RMB 1.60 (US$0.20) for subsequent kms. Rates vary slightly between taxi companies and rise 30% late at night. Buses charge a flat fare of RMB 1–2 (less than US$0.30), but are difficult to navigate without a knowledge of Chinese.

Instructions: Taxi stands at Beijing airport are located outside baggage claim. Avoid the taxi touts and follow the signs to the official taxi rank, where queues form along metal railings and a marshal controls proceedings. Marshals may be able to translate the hotel name, but it would be preferable to have it written in Chinese characters, or have the hotel already located on a bilingual map, since few taxi drivers speak English and the hotel’s name is quite different in Chinese. Maps can be obtained from the tourist information desk inside the terminal building.
