Hotel Information: Business and leisure guests, both local and from America and Europe, enter Capital Hotel to find a two-storey atrium lobby with polished granite floors and modern chandeliers. Goldfish swim in bowls and fresh flowers form spectacular displays. Furnishings include lacquered columns, wood carvings, and incense burners carved with lucky bats. A nine-dragon gilt screen hangs behind the reception area, which is to the left.
Amenity highlights: Capital Hotel features comprehensive conference facilities that include two ballrooms, and a full-service business centre with computer terminals and Internet access. Insider tip: The contemporary energy of China is on show along Wangfujing, the capital’s most renowned shopping street. To the north lie the back lakes, surrounded by a meandering network of old alleyways and courtyard (hutong) houses. A wander through the neighbourhood gives a glimpse of street life, and a flavour of imperial China that has now largely been confined to palaces and museums.

Getting around: Getting around the city by public transport or taxi is both cheap and convenient. The Beijing metro system has three lines, many stopping at or near tourist and business destinations. Numbered stations and announcements in English make using the system relatively easy, and tickets cost RMB 3-5 (less than US$0.50) depending on the destination. The closest stops to Capital Hotel are Qianmen or Chongwenmen on Line 2, each about five minutes’ walk away. Rates vary slightly between taxi companies and rise 30% late at night. Buses charge a flat fare of RMB 1-2 (less than US$0.30), but are difficult to navigate without a knowledge of Chinese.
