Insider tip: Six blocks down Main Street is the J-Bar in the Hotel Jerome, which serves “Aspen crud,” a bourbon-spiked milkshake. The drink may have been devised during Prohibition, when the bar was transformed into a soda fountain.

Aspen Mountain is eight blocks away; Aspen Highlands is three miles away; Buttermilk is four miles away; and Snowmass is 10 miles away (all stops on the Aspen Skiing Company shuttle route).
Aspen Parks and Recreation, which maintains 30 public parks and playgrounds within the town, offers recreational facilities and opportunities. Among them: the Aspen Golf and Tennis Club, the Red Brick Gym (indoor climbing and fitness/wellness classes), Aspen Skate Park (skateboarding), the Aspen Ice Garden (ice-skating), Koch Park (volleyball), and the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC), which has two pools, a water slide, and a National Hockey League regulation ice rink.
The cabins are eight blocks from the base of 11,212-foot Aspen Mountain, where skiers can take a 14-minute ride to the summit on the Silver Queen Gondola. Ajax, as it’s known locally, has 76 trails on 673 acres of skiable terrain—48 percent more difficult, 26 percent most difficult, and 36 percent expert—accessible by eight lifts, including the gondola. Average snowfall is 300 inches.
Aspen Highlands, three miles north, is bigger and more beginner-friendly. The 11,675-foot mountain offers 131 trails on 790 acres of skiable terrain—18 percent easiest, 30 percent more difficult, 16 percent most difficult, and 36 percent expert—accessible by four lifts.
Buttermilk, also three miles south, has a 9,900-foot summit and a reputation as an excellent ski-instruction mountain. Its 42 trails encompass 430 acres of skiable terrain—of which 35 percent are rated for beginners, 39 percent are more difficult, and 26 percent are most difficult; they are accessible by nine lifts. Buttermilk is home to Aspen’s ski school and includes one half-pipe, a two-mile terrain park, and the Boardercross course.
Snowmass, nine miles from Aspen, has a summit of 12,510 feet. It has 3,100 acres of skiable terrain. Its 87 trails—6 percent easiest, 50 percent more difficult, 12 percent most difficult, and 32 percent expert—are accessible from 21 lifts, including seven high-speed quad chairs.

Located on the residential end of Aspen’s Main Street, near the entrance to town, L’Auberge d’Aspen is a complex of 16 private cottages, an office, and a centrally located outdoor spa tub. Complimentary amenities include local newspapers (available at the office) self parking, and ski storage.
The cottages are an official stop on the Aspen Skiing Company’s skier-shuttle route, which offers complimentary service. During winter, the complimentary shuttle operates continuously, to and from Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass Village.
