Hotel Information: Etched-glass doors open to a two-level atrium lobby. The sounds of a baby grand player piano mingle with the splashing of a small fountain, and a freestanding staircase inlaid with polished jade, the state gem, leads to the mezzanine. Guests appreciate the Sheraton's casual elegance and proximity to downtown Anchorage.
Amenity highlights: The Ptarmigan Lounge, off the lobby, is warm and inviting, with a stone fireplace topped by antlers, tables hewn from logs, and red-and-black overstuffed armchairs. Wildlife photos and traditional snowshoes are displayed on red walls. The family-friendly Ptarmigan Restaurant, with beamed ceiling and Native art, is popular for its daily breakfast buffet, served year-round, and seasonal dinner buffet of prime rib and seafood.
Insider tip: Fat and feisty salmon swarm Ship Creek, a half-mile from the hotel, mid-May through August. Anglers can rent gear downtown. A good place to watch the action is the footbridge and viewing platform near the dam, about a five-minute walk east of the Ulu Factory.

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 11-mile paved path along Cook Inlet, draws walkers, runners, bicyclists, and even moose—the latter generally found toward trail's end. In winter, the trail is lighted and groomed for cross-country skiing. The closest trail access is about a mile from the hotel. Bike rentals are available downtown. Flat Top Mountain, about 11 miles from downtown, is a more strenuous hiking trail. Views from the summit encompass the city, the Chugach Mountains, and Cook Inlet.
Outfitters in Anchorage offer fly-in fishing adventures to the backcountry. The Alyeska Resort, about 40 miles from downtown, has 1,000 acres of deep, pristine snow for downhill skiing and snowboarding. Other winter pastimes near the city include dog sledding, ice skating, and snowmobile tours.
