Travel Details

Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage

Hotel Information: Capturing the essence of an upscale hunting lodge, the lobby is a menagerie of mounted trophy game, including huge polar and Kodiak bears, caribou, Dall sheep, and moose heads. An eagle statue stands by the entrance; just beyond is a six-foot globe. Leather couches, a massive rock fireplace, and a big-screen TV invite relaxation. Guests include athletes, entertainers, businesspeople, and political leaders—including President Jimmy Carter. Many combine their Anchorage visit with backcountry adventures via floatplane.

Amenity highlights: The Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage is situated along Lake Spenard, a busy floatplane base. Both the Flying Machine restaurant and the Fancy Moose lounge provide views of the floatplanes. Come summer, locals and guests flock to the Fancy Moose’s lakefront patio for fresh seafood, drinks, spectacular sunsets, and floatplane-watching. The hotel also has its own floatplane dock.

Insider tip: The Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, a mile from the hotel, displays rare Alaskan bush planes, military craft, and planes undergoing restoration. Among the historic craft is the 1928 Stearman, which flew to arctic villages with diphtheria serum in 1931 and, in 1932, was one of the first planes to land on Mount McKinley. The museum is open daily except Tuesdays, June 1–September 15; weekends the rest of the year.
