Travel Details

Hotel Captain Cook

Hotel Information: Hotel Captain Cook comprises three copper-colored towers in the center of downtown Anchorage. A curved driveway leads to the main entrance, where door staff in top hats greet visitors who include political figures, international dignitaries, and well-known entertainers. Beyond the hand-carved entry, the nautical theme includes huge original paintings of Captain Cook’s adventures, ship models, and South Seas masks.

Amenity highlights: The hotel’s crowning glory is the Crow’s Nest restaurant, perched on the 20th floor. This destination dining room is renowned for its astonishing views of the city, mountains, and Cook Inlet, as well as its sophisticated American cuisine.

The health club, located on the hotel’s lower level, offers an indoor pool and spa tub, along with separate workout facilities for men and women. Hotel-wide wireless Internet access is complimentary.

Insider tip: Exquisite scarves and caps made of qiviut, the ultra-soft underwool of the Arctic musk ox, are available at the Oomingmak Musk Ox Co-op, one block from the hotel. The cooperative is owned by Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages who hand-knit each item. Each village has a signature pattern. These warm yet feather-light garments are expensive, but they make extraordinary gifts.

Rooms

The Hotel Captain Cook offers sumptuously appointed guestrooms in three towers (10, 17, and 19 stories)—all accessible via elevators within the lobby. Large windows that open provide views of Cook Inlet or the Chugach Mountains. All rooms have ceiling fans, but no air conditioning.

Wireless Internet access is complimentary. Beds feature down duvets and pillows. Bathrooms offer separate vanity areas and thick bathrobes. Turndown service is provided nightly.

Massage treatments are also available (surcharges). The club also has separate women's and men's areas-each with a workout room containing cardio machines, weight-training machines, and free weights. Each area is also equipped with tanning beds (surcharges), a lounge, locker room, sauna, and steam rooms. Fitness classes such as Pilates, yoga, and water aerobics are also provided and are included in the club entrance charge. The club is open seven days a week.

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 11-mile paved path along Cook Inlet, draws walkers, runners, bicyclists, and even moose-the latter generally found toward trail's end. Along the way are maritime and mountain views, marshlands, tidal mudflats, and flocks of waterfowl. Pods of beluga whales are sometimes visible far offshore. When winter arrives, the trail is lighted and groomed for cross-country skiing. The closest trail access is about three blocks from the hotel, at the foot of 5th Avenue, just past Elderberry Park. Bike rentals are available downtown. Flat Top Mountain, 11 miles from downtown, is another popular-but more strenuous-hiking trail. Views from the summit encompass the city, the Chugach Mountains, Cook Inlet, and Turnagain Arm.

Outfitters in Anchorage offer fly-in fishing adventures to the backcountry via seaplane. The Alyeska Resort, 40 miles from downtown, has 1,000 acres of deep, pristine snow for downhill skiing and snowboarding.
