Hotel Captain Cook

Hotel Information: Captain James Cook helped define Alaska in the 18th century by mapping its jagged coastline for the first time. Since 1965, the Hotel Captain Cook has defined luxury accommodations in Alaska within its three copper-colored towers in the center of downtown Anchorage.

As Alaska's sole member of the Preferred Hotels Group, the Hotel Captain Cook pays honor to Alaska's storied history. After being greeted at the head of the curving driveway by staffers in top hats and passing through the hand-carved main entry, guests are enveloped by the sense of history evoked by huge original paintings of Captain Cook’s voyages from centuries past, ship models, and South Seas masks.

The hotel also embraces the cutting edge of contemporary service, from the heralded Crow's Nest to its legendary wine cellar. Guests will find nearly every convenience needed within the towers' walls, including dry-cleaning service, men's and women's hair salons, an ATM, and a 24-hour business center.

Amenity highlights: The hotel’s crowning glory is the Crow’s Nest restaurant, perched on the 20th floor. This destination dining room is renowned for its astonishing views of the city, mountains, and Cook Inlet, as well as its sophisticated cuisine.

In the health club, located on the hotel’s lower level, exertion meets bliss as guests both recharge and relax. Offerings include circuit-training, cardio classes, massages, separate as well as shared workout facilities for men and women, and hot tub soaks.

For guests who wish to go whale watching, fly-fishing, or flight seeing over a glacier, the concierges at Hotel Captain Cook can help book excursions, often arranging for pick-up at the hotel’s entrance.

Insider tip: Exquisite scarves and caps made of qiviut, the ultra-soft underwool of the Arctic musk ox, are available at the Oomingmak Musk Ox Co-op, one block from the hotel. The cooperative is owned by Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages who hand-knit each item. Each village has a signature pattern. These warm yet feather-light garments are expensive, but they make extraordinary gifts.

Wireless Internet access is complimentary. Beds feature down duvets and pillows. Bathrooms offer separate vanity areas and thick bathrobes. Turndown service is available(on request).

Recreation

The Captain Cook Athletic Club and Spa (surcharge), located on the lower level, includes an indoor pool and spa tub, circuit-training room, and racquetball court. Massage treatments are also available (surcharges). The club also has separate women's and men's areas-each with a workout room containing cardio machines, weight-training machines, and free weights. Each area is also equipped with tanning beds (surcharges), a lounge, locker room, sauna, and steam rooms. Fitness classes such as Pilates, yoga, and water aerobics are also provided and are included in the club entrance charge. The club is open seven days a week.

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 11-mile paved path along Cook Inlet, draws walkers, runners, bicyclists, and even moose-the latter generally found toward trail's end. Along the way are maritime and mountain views, marshlands, tidal mudflats, and flocks of waterfowl. Pods of beluga whales are sometimes visible far offshore. When winter arrives, the trail is lighted and groomed for cross-country skiing. The closest trail access is about three blocks from the hotel, at the foot of 5th Avenue, just past Elderberry Park. Bike rentals are available downtown. Flat Top Mountain, 11 miles from downtown, is another popular-but more strenuous-hiking trail. Views from the summit encompass the city, the Chugach Mountains, Cook Inlet, and Turnagain Arm.

Outfitters in Anchorage offer fly-in fishing adventures to the backcountry via seaplane. The Alyeska Resort, 40 miles from downtown, has 1,000 acres of deep, pristine snow for downhill skiing and snowboarding. Other winter pastimes near the city include dog sledding, ice skating, and snowmobile tours.
