Hotel Information: Built for the 1928 Summer Olympics, this L-shaped hotel was extensively refurbished in 2003. Inside the calm of the lobby is a large reception area with an Italian Murano-glass chandelier. With top attractions such as the Floating Flower Market, the Rijksmuseum, and Dam Square within 1 km (0.5 miles), this hotel is popular with vacationers.
Amenity highlights: The pizzeria serves a variety of pizzas, as well as pastas and salads. Views are of the busy Vijzelstraat and the Flower Market area. The light-filled Ristorante Caruso serves seasonal Italian fare; large arched windows frame city and market views.
Insider tip: The Tuschinski Theatre, 100 m (110 yards) from the hotel, recently completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that restored this Art Deco movie palace to its original splendor. Created by Abraham Tuschinski, a tailor from Poland, the theater was built in 1921 and features a Wurlitzer organ with 5,000 pipes, acres of Art Deco murals, silk wall hangings, and hand-knotted carpets. Multilingual tours are available.
